Nuwakot district is located to the northwest of Kathmandu, The name, Nuwakot, is made up of two words ‘nawa’ and ‘kort’. Nawa means nine in Nepali and ‘kort’ means sacred religious site at the top of hill. Nuwakot Durbar is one the historical sites in Nepal which embraces the glorious historical stories of the past.
The palace is also known as Saat Talle Durbar meaning seven storied palace overlooking the valley.This palace was built by Prithivi Narayan Shah who is the founder of Nepal. This palace functioned as his aid campaign during conquering Kathmandu. The artisans and architects were hired from Patan to establish this architecturally beautiful palace.
You can visit this beautiful palace/fort from the Pasang Lhamu Highway travelling from Kathmandu. The fort stands as perfect place to explore the magnificent architecture of the palace and natural splendor of the Nuwakot district. The Newari village surrounding the palace offers great cultural and religious experience to explore. The palace was transformed into museum in April 2011.
